Children use a building differently
Adults touch a building at waist and hand height, move in predictable paths, and mostly stay off the floor. Children touch everything, at every height, and spend part of the day sitting on the floor. In a daycare room the floor is a work surface.
That shifts where the effort goes. In an office, a light switch and a door handle are the touchpoints; in a classroom, the touchpoint set includes chair backs and seats, table tops and undersides, cubby edges, shared supply bins, toy surfaces, door push bars at child height, the lower two feet of walls and doors, and the handrails on stairs. Hand-height for a four-year-old is knee-height for the person cleaning, and it is the band most commonly missed.
Illness moves fast in these buildings. One child with a stomach bug in a room of twenty, sharing tables, bins, and a restroom, is a different transmission problem than one employee in an open-plan office. Frequency on touchpoints during the fall and winter matters more here than almost anything else in the contract.
Cafeterias, kitchens, and gyms
Cafeteria and multipurpose rooms turn over several times a day and then sit unused. Tables and bench seats need wiping on top and along the edges children grip when climbing in and out, and the floor needs sweeping and damp mopping with attention to the gum and dried food under the tables. Where the room doubles as an assembly or gym space, it needs a floor treatment that leaves it non-slip rather than polished.
Gym and activity floors take specific care. A sealed wood floor needs a dust mop daily and an approved auto-scrubber or damp method on a cycle, with the wrong chemical capable of clouding the finish or making it slick. Rubber and poured urethane floors want a neutral cleaner, not a degreaser. Mats used for tumbling or naptime are wiped down on a frequency tied to how heavily they are used.
Classrooms, and what gets cleaned versus what gets straightened

Soft items are their own problem. Same for the carpeted sections of a preschool room, which take more liquid in a month than an office carpet takes in a year.
What we do not do is put the room away. Teachers arrange their rooms deliberately and a crew that tidies materials into what looks like order costs a teacher an hour the next morning. Our crews clean around arranged materials, move chairs and replace them, and leave everything else where it was. Where a teacher wants surfaces cleared for a full wipe-down, we agree a night for that and they clear it in advance.

Product choices in a building full of children
Children are lower to the floor, breathe faster relative to their body size, and put their hands in their mouths, so residue and fumes matter more here than anywhere else we work.
Our default in classroom and childcare spaces is a low-odor, no-rinse-required cleaner for general surfaces and a disinfectant with the shortest effective contact time and the least aggressive chemistry that will do the job, applied to a cloth rather than sprayed into the air of an occupied room. Strong-scent and solvent products stay out of occupied areas entirely. Where a disinfectant needs a rinse on food or mouth-contact surfaces, it gets rinsed.
If your school or center has a product policy, a green cleaning standard, or a licensing requirement that names specific products, we will use those. If you have a fragrance-sensitive or asthmatic population, tell us during the walk-through and we will scope around it.
Restrooms built for small children
Child-height fixtures change the work. Low toilets, low sinks, low mirrors, and low dispensers mean nearly everything is below the eye line of the person cleaning it, so the underside of the bowl rim, the back of the fixture, the base where it meets the floor, and the underside of the sink all need to be looked at directly rather than wiped past.
Misses are more frequent and less accurate in a children's restroom, which means the floor around the fixture, the wall behind it, and the base of the partition carry more soil than in an adult restroom. Mopping the middle of the floor does nothing about it. Those areas need a disinfectant applied to the surface and agitated, and the grout line at the base of the fixture is where odor lives.
Diapering and toileting areas in infant and toddler rooms are cleaned to whatever your licensing procedure specifies, and your procedure takes precedence over our checklist. Anything involving a child's care at the time is your staff's job, not ours.
Adult and staff restrooms are cleaned to the same standard, with separate tools. Restroom equipment never moves into a classroom or a food area.
Staff, access, and how we handle who is in your building
